How do I get the intrauterine device or system (IUD/IUS) in Malta?
Copper and hormone IUDs are usually inserted in private gynaecology clinics, and the costs of the device and insertion usually have to be paid out of pocket. If you have private health insurance please check whether they would cover or subsidise the cost of an IUD.
Most gynaecologists in Malta insert IUDs in their private clinics. If you want us to recommend someone, please
contact FPAS.
The national health service of Malta currently does not subsidise or insert IUDs for free if they are primarily used for contraception. However, if you suffer from heavy periods you may be eligible to have a Mirena inserted on the national health service, although you will probably still need to pay for the Mirena itself. If you think you are eligible please discuss with your GP and ask for a referral to Mater Dei Hospital. Eligibility is determined by the national health service and we will not be able to tell you if you are eligible or not.
