How many Misoprostol tablets do I need to take?

A typical abortion pill pack will contain Mifepristone and four or more tablets of Misoprostol at a dose of 200mcg each tablet. These are either tablets marked "B" in a combi-pack, or are tablets called Cytotec or Cytotecal. In some cases, the abortion pill pack contains double strength Misoprostol at a dose of 400mcg each tablet.
 
For pregnancies up to 9 weeks, research shows that taking 1 tablet of Mifepristone 200 mg and 4 tablets of Misoprostol 200 mcg each under the tongue 24 hours later, is a safe and effective way to have an abortion, and the abortion will be successful in the vast majority of cases. 
 
Recent research on telemedical abortion, however, indicates that even in pregnancies of less than 9 weeks, an extra dose of 2 tablets of Misoprostol 200mcg, used 3 to 4 hours after the first dose, further reduces the risk of an unsuccessful or incomplete abortion. This is particularly important in countries where abortion is restricted, such as Malta, because if the abortion with pills is unsuccessful it is not easy to opt for a surgical abortion afterwards.
 
For pregnancies of more than 9 weeks, extra doses of Misoprostol after the first four tablets should always be taken if available.
 
If you have received Misoprostol tablets with a dose of 400mcg each, the number of tablets mentioned above should be halved.
