I am less than 8 weeks pregnant and I need an abortion. What are my options?

An abortion with pills at home is the usual method of abortion for pregnancies under 8 weeks.

Abortion pills (Mifepristone and Misoprostol) can safely be used at home up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, as long as you have clear instructions on how to use them, and can seek medical help if needed. Abortion pills are very effective, and successfully end the pregnancy in over 98% of cases.

Women on Web and Women Help Women are reliable organisations that are known to send abortion pills to women in Malta. They ask for a donation of €75 to €120 to cover the cost of the pills and postage, but if you are unable to pay this please let them know and they may still be able to help. Keep in mind that abortion pills are sent from abroad and will take around two weeks to arrive.

Some clinics (but not all!) offer surgical abortions for pregnancies of under 8 weeks, so if you would like to pursue a surgical abortion you could contact different clinics, such as BPAS and Marie Stopes in the UK, to see which ones may be able to help you. The charity Abortion Support Network could also help you book appointments and arrange travel to an abortion clinic abroad.
