Monthly cost of contraception in Malta
Long acting contraceptives (such as the IUD and the implant) usually have a much higher price per unit than short acting contraceptives (such as condoms and the contraceptive pill). However, long acting contraceptives also have a much longer lifespan, usually protecting against pregnancy for a number of years.
If you do not intend to become pregnant for a few years, it makes financial sense to consider a long acting contraceptive because the cost per month of these can be lower than that of short acting contraceptives.
The table below lists some of the most commonly used contraceptives in Malta and their unit cost per month, assuming they are used for the whole of their lifespan. Please note this table only considers the retail price per unit of the contraceptive. Doctors' fees and clinic fees are not included and these will increase costs.
