What happens if I do not take Misoprostol after Mifepristone?
If, for some reason, you take the Mifepristone and then do not take the Misoprostol part of the abortion pack, you can have one of three outcomes:
- You might miscarry anyways, without ever taking Misoprostol.
- You might experience what is called a "missed miscarriage", which means that the fetus is no longer alive, but the products of conception do not leave your body. This has to be treated with a vacuum aspiration in hospital, or with the use of Misoprostol.
- Your pregnancy might continue. If you decide you want to keep the pregnancy at this point, know that Mifepristone is not associated with an increased risk of fetal malformation (it does not damage the baby), but it may increase the risk of miscarriage later in the pregnancy.
It is important to have an ultrasound to check if the pregnancy has continued after taking Mifepristone. DO NOT book ultrasounds with people or organisations that are "pro-life" or claim to offer "abortion reversal treatment." There is no treatment that can reverse the effects of Mifepristone, and these people may report you to the police for having used Mifepristone.
