When choosing your preferred method of contraception, consider the following:

Do you want a permanent method? If so, you can consider having sterilisation or a vasectomy if you're a man.

Do you need protection from sexually transmitted infections? If so use male or female condoms.

Do you have painful and heavy periods? If so, consider the combined pill, a hormone IUD (Mirena or Jaydess), or the vaginal ring.

Do you need a reversible method that you do not have to remember to take everyday, or use each time you have sex? If so, consider the IUD (copper or hormone), implant, or a vaginal ring.

Do you have a medical condition that makes it unsafe for use to have oestrogen? If so, consider condoms, the mini-pill, IUDs (copper or hormone), or the implant.

Do you want a reversible hormone-free contraceptive? If so, consider condoms or the copper IUD.

Your doctor or gynaecologist will help you choose the best contraceptive method for you.
